Rethinking Architecture
Angewandte Vienna & Salone del Mobile Milano

The impacts of climate change are far-reaching and demand specialized approaches, particularly within the construction sector, a significant contributor to resource consumption. 

Guided by the expertise of acclaimed designer Stefan Diez and Frank Netzband from Syndikat Walden, Industrial Design students at Angewandte Wien have delved for the duration of two semesters into the examination of standardized building elements within the context of climate change and have developed innovative solutions that reimagine architectural elements from the perspective of an industry designer. 

Confronting the rising temperatures in urban structures, these envisioned solutions aim to minimize the environmental footprint of urban life.  

We were honored to be invited by Angewandte Wien to participate in this visionary initiative and to contribute our visual solutions in support of the students’ projects. Advised by our very own co-founder and managing partner Nikolaus Türk, together with our project and key account manager Sarah Schöning, our team of artists collaborated with the students to create the visual identity of their projects, simultaneously depicting Vienna cityscape´s aesthetic dimension. 

The proposed ideas spanned a broad spectrum, ranging from the widespread integration of photovoltaics in public spaces to projects focused on shading and the cooling effects of green facades. Additionally, there were proposals for objects such as furniture and everyday products designed to foster sustainable living habits. 

These solutions were showcased as culmination in the debut presentation of the “Rethinking the Elements of Architecture” semester topics to an international audience at the prestigious 2023 Salone Internazionale del Mobile Milano – Milan Design Week, offering a fresh perspective at the Salone Satellite Fair Ground.  

Launched in 1961 and showcasing each year a few thousand of the most dynamic and creative companies on the global market, the Salone del Mobile.Milano is an international platform with the “privilege of actuality,” established as the essential industry-wide event. 

Having been deemed worthy to collaborate with Angewandte Wien and subsequently being showcased at prestigious events like the Salone del Mobile.Milano fills us with pride, standing as a testament to our commitment to our profession.
